Persian carpet making did not become a huge "industry" until around the 8th century A.D. during what is known as the Islamic period of carpet making. One region in particular of the Islamic state that made carpets was the Azarbaijan Province. This Province, during this time, was the largest provider of carpets in the world, commonly providing carpets for use in the courts if caliphs.

During the reigns of the Seljuq and Ilkhanate dynasties carpet making took a huge upward advance in production. Many mosques built during this time period were covered in elaborate carpets made during this time. In fact, carpet making became such a big deal that even special herds of sheep were raised to produce the finest wool for carpet weaving. The Persians were also very skilled in the art of dyeing carpets and rugs with different colors dyes to make some of the most lavish and beautiful one of a kind rug.

Though the time period has changed, carpet and rug making has not stopped. Even though in the past rugs and carpets were made by hand on looms, and skillfully woven, today they are mainly done by machine. But do not let this discourage you from finding a real hand woven Persian carpet. The demand for hand woven carpets is very high and there are many skilled weavers and carpet makers that preserve the ancient art. Iran is still a major exporter of handmade carpets which you can buy. But do know that a handmade carpet from Iran will cost you a lot more than a machine made carpet from somewhere else. Regardless of the price, the beauty of a handmade carpet is usually enough incentive to buy.

The whole history of Persian carpets is really unknown. One thing though is known, Persian carpet making is a artistic and beautiful skill that will be used and cherished for years to come.
